The Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary gains its name owing to the presence of endemic and endangered hardwood trees locally known as Chenkurinji, which were once regarded as royal trees by the erstwhile State of Travancore. The river transversing the reserve is also known as Shendurney River on the banks of which the bulk of the sanctuary is spread out. With its tropical monsoon climate, the forest ranges from tropical evergreen rain forest to myristica swamp forest, from tropical savanna to grassland ecosystem. The area though pristine give evidence to prehistoric human habitation, may be lured by the refreshing perennial rivulets and gorgeous waterfalls breathtakingly set within the forest.
With the permission of the flora and fauna of the sanctuary, the custodian of the forest, the wildlife warden at the Thenmala Dam Site at about a short distance of about 7 KM away, may allow you to experience the wilderness of the tropical forest, where the denizens celebrate the monsoons with great enthusiasm. For the less adventurous a boat ride in the Thenmala Reservior may well be arranged by the Thenmala Ecotourism Center, also located at the Dam Site where river Shendurney joins with Kazuthurity River and Kulathupuzha River to form Kallada River.
